In 2019 I enjoyed some great hikes in far reaching places. However, this is neither as exposed as Crib Goch or as majestic in scale as the CMD, but is still one of the best walks and scrambles in the Lake District if not the UK. And I’m glad I did because it was awesome! While the ‘typical’ route is to climb Helvellyn along Striding Edge, there are rich rewards ascending Swirral Edge instead – you will probably find it is much quieter than Striding Edge. A hike up Helvellyn is one of those famous Lake District walks I’ve wanted to do for years and never made it… so I had to put that right. It starts from the road at Patterdale Hall - heads up to the 'Hoel-in-the-Wall' then does a basic loop around Red Tarn - taking in Striding Edge - Helvellyn and descending back down via Swirral Edge.
